[CogSci] deaf x lab seeks applications for Ph.D. in Cognitive Science

The deaf x lab at Rochester Institute of Technology is accepting applications from potential doctoral students interested in applying to our new joint Ph.D. program in Cognitive Science<http://rit.edu/cogsci>. This exciting program launches in fall 2024, with faculty from five of RIT’s colleges. The program offers a foundational grounding in cognitive science methods (computational modeling, cognitive neuroscience and behavioral experimentation) and offers a wide range of elective courses (e.g. neuromorphic computing, animal cognition, psycholinguistics of signed languages) allowing students to tailor their coursework to their personal research and career goals. Industry placements are encouraged and supported through RIT’s Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education<https://www.rit.edu/careerservices/students/co-op>.

The PI of the deaf x lab, Prof. Matt Dye, is especially interested in applicants who would want to work on either somatosensory augmentation of speech for cochlear implant users, or on decoding the neural representation of American Sign Language in deaf and hard-of-hearing signers. Prof. Dye collaborates extensively with Prof. Anu Sharma<https://www.colorado.edu/slhs/anu-sharma> at the University of Colorado Boulder and with Dr. Edmund Lalor<https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/people/112361160-edmund-c-lalor> at the University of Rochester Medical Center, providing opportunities for networking outside of RIT. Experience with EEG methods is desirable, as is the ability to communicate in American Sign Language, which is the primary language of the lab and used for daily science communication.
