Northwestern University’s Department of Linguistics<https://linguistics.northwestern.edu/> is hiring a Research Study Assistant to coordinate its research facilities, equipment, and resources, and to oversee day-to-day activities of its research labs. This one-year term position is open immediately and is renewable based on project needs and funding.

Research in NU Linguistics studies language using both quantitative and qualitative methods, including online and in-person experiments, audio and video recording, eye tracking, acoustic analysis, and corpus analysis, supported by both internal funding sources and external grants. The Research Study Assistant would support research in the department by:

  *   Managing Linguistics laboratory operations, including oversight of equipment maintenance and research supplies, and participant scheduling.

  *   Providing technical support for Linguistics researchers, including coding support.

  *   Promotion and knowledge sharing of ongoing research and studies in the labs and coordinating multiple researchers’ schedules.

  *   Training undergraduate research assistants.

  *   Managing crowd-sourcing pipelines, including participant information and expenses. 

  *   Managing invoices and coordinating fund distribution among multiple sponsors.

  *   Developing protocols and assisting with Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications.

The successful applicant would be fully integrated into our research community, with access to lab meetings, research presentations, and professional development opportunities related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  *   Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a major such as social or health science or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience. We are particularly interested in students with degrees in linguistics, cognitive science, psychology, communications sciences and disorders / hearing and speech sciences or related fields.

  *   Prior applicable experience in working or volunteering in a research setting.

  *   Must complete NU's IRB CITI training before interacting with any participants & must re-certify every 3 years

Minimum Competencies:

  *   Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  *   Outstanding organizational skills and ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects

Preferred Qualifications: 

  *   Training and experience with at least one research-related technical method (e.g., eye tracking, EEG/ERP, acoustic analysis in Praat)

  *   Familiarity with higher-education/lab-based research

  *   Familiarity with specialized speech and language software including Praat, ELAN, Montreal Corpus Tools, PsychoPy and crowdsourcing platforms (e.g., Prolific, Pavlovia)
