Dear Colleagues,

The Computational Cognitive Policy Lab at UCLA, led by Dr. Rachit Dubey is seeking 1-2 fully funded PhD students for Fall 2026 (https://ucla-cocopol.github.io/).

We study how people perceive, reason about, and act on long-term societal challenges, especially climate change, through the lens of computational cognitive science. Some topics of interest include:

  * How minds normalize slow, cumulative threats (the "boiling frog" effect)
  * Designing human-centric climate policies using AI
  * Cognitive offloading, agency, and trust in AI systems

We welcome applicants with backgrounds in cognitive science, machine learning, human-AI interaction, or decision science. Strong computational skills and interest in applying cognitive science research to real-world problems are highly valued.

In addition to the Department of Communication, the lab maintains strong ties with Psychology, Computer Science, Political Science, and Public Policy departments at UCLA, providing additional resources and collaboration opportunities for PhD students.

Interested students can contact me at rdubey at ucla.edu<mailto:rdubey at ucla.edu> or apply through the UCLA's Communication PhD program: https://comm.ucla.edu/graduate/admissions/. The application deadline is December 1, 2025.

Best,
Rachit
