The Advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence for Communication
Science Group <http://ai4commsci.github.io/> is hiring a new member of
our team working on the indigenous languages of Taiwan (which are not
related to Chinese). This position may be filled at the post-bac level
(expected salary: $54k-$60k, depending on experience) or post-doc level
(starting at $75k). Remote work is possible. People who can start
immediately are preferred, but summer start dates will be considered.

They are poorly understood, but they are understood well enough for it
to be clear that they break theory. They break linguistic theories. They
break theories of language acquisition. And it is not even clear where
to begin with respect to theories of language processing or
neurolinguistics. They are also highly endangered. A number are already
gone – some without leaving any record at all – and at current rate the
remaining 16 will be gone by the end of the century.

Computational and experimental research require corpora, so we have been
working with researchers and community groups to leverage artificial
intelligence to compile a large corpus
<https://ai4commsci.gitbook.io/formosanbank> – currently over 8 million
tokens and 730 hours of audio. While we are still rapidly adding to the
corpus — we anticipate reaching over 20 million tokens within a year or
so — we are also scaling up our computational and experimental research.

We are looking for someone to help manage the corpus project and
contribute to any of the following:
 * Building NLP tools such as ASR and MT
 * Computational analyses of language structure
 *  Computational models of acquisition
 *  Psycholinguistic studies
 * Language acquisition research (home-based acquisition, immersion
    schools, etc.)

We are especially interested in applicants who can speak a Formosan
language; can read and write Chinese; have experience with NLP in low-
resource contexts; have experience with language documentation.
