The Larson Language and Cognition Lab<https://sites.google.com/umsystem.edu/larson-language-cognition-lab/home/research?authuser=0> (Director: Dr. Caroline Larson) is accepting applications for a funded PhD position at the University of Missouri through the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program or College of Health Sciences. Full tuition is covered along with a 12-month stipend (up to 5 years of study) and annual travel for meetings. The project aims to test bidirectional relationships between language and visual cognition in toddlers at risk for autism and developmental language disorder longitudinally. It is part of a large-scale international project that will provide an integrated account of language and shape representation across languages and cultures (European Research Council Synergy Grant<https://erc.europa.eu/news-events/news/erc-2024-synergy-grants-results>: Shape Project).
The Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program<https://inp.missouri.edu/> focuses on promoting basic and clinical research, providing broad and individualized training, and facilitating collaboration. It offers a rigorous doctoral curriculum, including lab rotations and coursework relevant to the project spanning four departments and student funding opportunities. There are seminars and gathering opportunities to foster intellectual and research collaboration amongst faculty and students. INP faculty conduct research at the Cognitive Neuroscience Systems Core Facility, which offers multiple neuroimaging technologies including fMRI and EEG, lecture series, and interactive workshops.
The PhD in Health & Rehabilitation Science<https://healthsciences.missouri.edu/phd-in-health-and-rehabilitation-science/> in the MU College of Health Sciences (CHS) is an interdisciplinary, research-focused doctoral program, with mentorship provided by faculty from seven departments, including Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences; Occupational Therapy; Physical Therapy; and Public Health. Students engage in interdisciplinary health science courses and build an individualized plan of study including courses from related disciplines across MU. Annual funding to support conference travel is available. The college has increased research expenditures by 90% in four years and hosts regular seminars on research, professional development, grantsmanship, and structured mentorship. It houses an Office of Research to advance the CHS research mission, such as through technical and grant support. The Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Department<https://healthsciences.missouri.edu/speech-language-and-hearing-sciences/research/> hosts monthly seminars for faculty research and guest speaker presentations. SLHS is active in interdisciplinary groups across MU’s campus (e.g., Cognitive Neuroscience Seminar) and offers clinical master’s and research doctorate degrees.
The University of Missouri-Columbia is the flagship campus of the University of Missouri system and is one of only 33 public universities in the country belonging to the Association of American Universities, a group of elite research universities. As both a research and land grant university, we have extraordinary opportunities for interdisciplinary interaction. In addition, Columbia is a wonderful college town halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City that is regularly ranked as one of the most livable cities in the country.
