Postdoctoral fellowship in speech science and major depression, Northwestern University
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship (contingent on availability of funding) for a National Institute of Health grant entitled Motoric features of the voice as indicators of psychomotor agitation and retardation in current and remitted MDD. This project examines whether speech acoustic measures can be used to detect motor symptoms of major depression.

The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by Matt Goldrick<https://faculty.wcas.northwestern.edu/matt-goldrick> (Department of Linguistics, Northwestern University), working closely in collaboration with researchers at Northwestern (Stewart Shankman<https://sites.northwestern.edu/nearlab/people/#LabDirector>, Vijay Mittal<https://www.adaptprogram.com/meet-our-adapt-team-1>) studying serious mental illness (e.g., affective disorders, schizophrenia) and researchers developing automated techniques for acoustic analysis at scale (Joseph Keshet<https://keshet.net.technion.ac.il/>, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology). The fellow will help this team develop and test automated workflows for collection and analysis of scripted and spontaneous speech collected both in and outside of the lab. The position will provide opportunities for speech scientists to grow their multidisciplinary skill set both in the science of mental health and machine learning.

The position is for one year, with the potential for renewal for a second year. The pay rate will follow NIH postdoctoral fellows stipend levels (see levels set in 2023 here<https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-23-076.html>). The position may start as early as April 1, 2024, and ideally would begin before June 1, 2024. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Linguistics, Communication Sciences and Disorders / Speech and Hearing Sciences, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, or a related field by the start date.

Applications and email inquiries about the position should be submitted to matt-goldrick at northwestern.edu<mailto:matt-goldrick at northwestern.edu>. Applications should include a CV (including contact information and links to written work) and the names of two references (letters will be requested after initial review of applications). For fullest consideration, applications should arrive by March 1, 2024.
