A research fellowship is available for students interested in applying tools and techniques from cognitive science, network science, evolutionary theory, physics, and/or computer science to the study of creativity and innovation. (For more information on the general research area see: https://people.ok.ubc.ca/lgabora/research.htm and https://gabora-psych.ok.ubc.ca/publications.htm .)

There are two possible programs you may be in while holding the fellowship:

Option 1: Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies at the Okanagan Campus (preferred)
Deadline: January 31, 2024
Information and application procedures: https://gradstudies.ok.ubc.ca/applying/

Option 2: Psychology at the Okanagan Campus
Deadline: December 1, 2023
Information and application procedures: https://psych.ok.ubc.ca/graduate/psychology/

The position is based on the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia, which ranks amongst the top universities in the world, located in Kelowna BC, the largest city in BC east of the lower mainland, in one of the most scenic regions of Canada.

It is possible to apply to multiple programs (e.g., both options 1 and 2 above) but if you do you will have to pay both application fees. Note: Depending on the program, you may be required to initially register as a Masters student, but students who plan to eventually transfer to the PhD program are strongly preferred.

The amount of the fellowship depends on qualifications, but it will be sufficient to cover tuition and basic living expenses for at least two years (with a possibility of up to four years), with an annual increase of at least 2% each year, and generally supplemented by other awards (depending on which awards the student qualifies for). If you wish to apply for a teaching assistantship to gain teaching experience at some point while at UBC that is possible.

Applications must (1) hold (or expect to hold by September 1, 2024) a B.Sc. or B.A. that includes courses in psychology, evolutionary theory, or computer science, (2) have maintained an A average over the last two years of study, (3) possess an interest in how creativity fuels cultural evolution, and how ideas evolve through human interaction. Please explain in your application how your interests and skills align with my research program. The ideal applicant will also have computer programming experience (course work in scientific visualization, computer graphics, social simulation, Unreal engine, and/or agent-based modeling are particularly valuable).

Applicants from any ethnic background, race, gender, or country are warmly welcomed. That said, a strong command of English is essential. It is not necessary to contact me before or after submitting your application, but if you have questions, feel free to email at liane[dot]gabora[at]ubc[dot]ca.
