A three-year full time (or 6 year part time) PhD scholarship is being offered in the Centre for Cogniton and Neuroscience at the University of Huddersfield, UK.

The project is entitled: "Early predictors of drug use: Using big data to understand the predictors and trajectories of drug use" and will be under the primary supervision of Dr Chris Retzler (c.retzler at hud.ac.uk). A description of the project is below and further details are available at this webpage: https://www.hud.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/research-scholarships/social-behavioural-sciences/ and by contacting Dr Retzler.

Deadline for applications: 26 May.

This PhD will utilise secondary data from the ABCD study<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fabcdstudy.org%2F&data=04|01|HHS-RE@hud.ac.uk|5bb115eaf891475d810b08d8dfc59026|b52e9fda06914585bdfc5ccae1ce1890|0|0|637505386899518173|Unknown|TWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D|1000&sdata=xCHGAp4H2GgseKzxEgBYXJqP3dCJ3Ml4PC%2FCU6aBek4%3D&reserved=0> and advanced analysis techniques to assess how biological and environmental factors predict the level and type of drug use across adolescence. This dataset is a large longitudinal study of brain development that follows more than 11,000 young people from the age of 9-10 years, tracking their biological, cognitive and behavioural development into young adulthood. This project presents a unique opportunity to access a rich longitudinal dataset of a size and nature that would usually be beyond the scope of a PhD. We plan to combine innovative statistical approaches (e.g., latent class analysis and group-based trajectory modelling), with neuroimaging analyses (e.g. fMRI, DTI), to gain novel insights into the interaction of different factors that predict early drug use. Results could be further used to inform research plans for primary data collection within the PhD. We welcome proposals that address the above questions (or related aims) and encourage applicants to work with us to develop their applications.

Best,

David
