Dear Colleagues,

Applications are invited for an academic position in Natural Language Processing (NLP) in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, as part of a continuing expansion in Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

The Opportunity:

Natural Language processing is a highly interdisciplinary field of research, encompassing methods and insights from Computer Science, AI, Linguistics, Psychology and Cognitive Science. It covers a wide range of linguistic phenomena and applications, including, among others: machine translation, syntactic and semantic parsing, text-to-text and concept-to-text generation, speech and dialogue systems, human robot interaction, knowledge discovery, sentiment analysis and social media, and multimodal processing of language and vision and embodied conversation. We are seeking candidates from any subfield of NLP.

The successful candidates will have (or be near to completing) a PhD, an established research agenda and the enthusiasm and ability to undertake original research, and to lead a research group. They will show excellent teaching capability and engagement with academic supervision. We are seeking current and future leaders in the field.

The School of Informatics is one of the top places in the world for research in natural language processing (see csrankings.org<http://csrankings.org/#/index?nlp&world>) and benefits from strong links to the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences (PPLS), the School of Social and Political Science, and the Institute for Design Informatics, which bridges the School of Informatics and Edinburgh College of Art. The School of Informatics and PPLS run Edinburgh’s UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in NLP. The present post has been created to reinforce Edinburgh's strength in NLP and to foster inter-disciplinary research, knowledge exchange and teaching.

The University of Edinburgh is one of the five founding partners of the UK's Alan Turing Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence; this gives rise to opportunities to interact with PhD students, research fellows and senior researchers within the Turing Institute. In addition, the University has just established one of the first ELLIS units, which are recognized centres of excellence in AI research across Europe. There are also ample opportunities within the University to enact collaborative activities with researchers in other areas of computer science, mathematics and statistics, and across the physical, social and medical sciences. Diversity and ethical issues in the domain of AI and its applications are also of particular interest.

Best wishes,
Chris Lucas
