PhD project: The New Parent Sleep Experience: sensitivity to infant signalling across genders and culture

Aarhus University, Faculty of Health, Department of Clinical Medicine, Interacting Minds Centre invites applications for a fully-financed PhD position for a new research project, ‘The New Parent Sleep Experience: sensitivity to infant signalling across genders and culture’. The project is funded by the Carlsberg Foundation: http://bit.ly/Carlsberg_project. The PhD position will be supervised by Christine Parsons and co-supervised by Joshua Skewes.

The anticipated start date is August/September 2020 (negotiable).

The research project
Our knowledge of early parenting and its effects on sleep comes largely from studies of mothers, with fathers either overlooked or under-emphasized. As fathers constitute 50% of parents, and have become increasingly involved in childcare, this project will explore similarities and differences in how men and women respond to infant signalling and how this relates to sleep quality in new parents. This project will comprise a series of studies using complementary methods, from lab-based recordings of sleep, to large scale app-based assessments of real-world parenting behaviour. The overarching aim is to understand the fundamental responses that govern early parenting and sleep quality, how these differ in fathers and mothers, and across cultures with divergent levels of work-related support for parents.

PhD position description
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the overall objectives of the project, and will be involved in all phases of the project, including formulating research questions, experimental design, data collection, analysis and dissemination. The successful candidate will be encouraged to focus on the aspects that aligns with their personal interests, and will be given the opportunity and flexibility to develop their own ideas and research questions. Given the project’s varied methodological approach, this position will require a candidate who is enthusiastic about complex data analysis.

Data collection will be supported by research assistants, and there will be an opportunity to supervise the work of junior team members.

The Interacting Minds Center (IMC)

The project will be hosted at IMC, a center which provides a transdisciplinary platform to study human interaction. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact and collaborate with researchers from the humanities, social sciences, cognitive science, biology and medicine, among other fields. The IMC hosts weekly guest lectures and regular intensive workshops, with both international and national speakers. The Center has affiliated researchers across numerous faculties and departments at Aarhus University, with access to excellent research facilities and infrastructure at the Cognition and Behaviour Lab, and the Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience. Interdisciplinary collaboration is strongly encouraged within this lively research environment.

Qualifications

Candidates must be eligible to begin either a 4 + 4 (integrated) PhD programme at Aarhus University or a 5 +3 PhD programme (https://phd.health.au.dk/doingaphd/, candidates are welcome to contact Parsons for clarification or the Graduate office). Candidates will be considered from any of the following areas: Cognitive Science, Psychology, Medicine, Public Health, Data Science, Engineering (or closely related fields).

Desirable criteria (any one or more of the following)
