Duolingo is looking for a world-class expert in the learning sciences
broadly construed who can effectively apply their knowledge of
learning-related research findings in the context of developing an
educational app. If you are well versed in the research on learning, can
think flexibly and creatively about research applications within specific
product constraints, and can clearly communicate ideas and research
findings to non-experts, this job is for you! You will join our team of
learning scientists, curriculum designers, and educational content
developers to help us deliver the best language education in the world.
This job is based in Pittsburgh, PA.

Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with a cross-functional group of stakeholders (product
managers, engineers, curriculum designers, educational content developers,
product designers) to bring research-informed product features to life
- Ensure that product features are well-grounded in learning science by
providing high-level guidance about how to apply research findings to the
Duolingo product
- Provide hands-on support with any tasks that would benefit from a
learning-expert perspective, such as learning-focused user research or data
analysis to evaluate the learning effectiveness of specific product
features or understand user learning outcomes
- Be responsible for regular communication with subject matter experts /
course creators across teams in order to leverage their insights for
product development

Requirements:
- Ph.D. in cognitive science, cognitive psychology, learning sciences,
linguistics, second language acquisition, or a related field
- Research expertise and strong publication record in an area within
learning sciences, including but not limited to language development,
second language acquisition, statistical learning, non-native speech
perception & learning, categorization & category learning, analogical
learning, or memory
- Strong skills in experimental design and data analysis
- Passion for language learning and some knowledge of at least one language
other than English
- Outstanding interpersonal communication and organizational skills
- A desire to make the world a better place through technology

Exceptional candidates will have:
- Experience working in industry, especially in educational technology
(e.g., internships)
- Excellent skills in data science tools, such as R, SQL, and Python
- High proficiency in multiple languages or experience teaching a second
language
