The University of Memphis invites applications for a tenure-track faculty
position at the Assistant/Associate Professor level to begin August 2019,
pending final budgetary approval. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. While the
specific area of specialization within cognitive science is open,
preference will be given to candidates who have an established record of
nationally recognized research, a history of obtaining external research
support (or high promise of doing so), and evidence of previous, successful
collaborative research. We are particularly interested in applicants who
have a strong background in the psychology of computer-human interaction,
computational modeling, human factors, and/or learning technologies. The
ideal faculty member would also be willing to lead or substantially
contribute to the development and testing of advanced learning environments
incorporating intelligent tutoring, conversational agents, and
computer-supported collaborative problem solving. This position is designed
to help us continue our 3-decade history of projects in these areas funded
by the Office of Naval Research, Army Research Laboratory, Advanced
Distributed Learning, National Science Foundation, Institute of Education
Sciences, and other agencies. Faculty in Psychology actively collaborate
with scientists at the Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) housed on
campus within the FedEx Institute of Technology. The IIS, an
interdisciplinary research center, has assembled a team of scientists
campus-wide who are dedicated to advancing the state of knowledge and
capabilities of intelligent systems, including psychological, biological,
and artificial systems. The colleague recruited for this position will be
expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which may
include courses in research methods or statistics. The Psychology
Department consists of more than 30 full-time faculty members, 125 graduate
students, and 750 undergraduate majors. In 1984, Psychology was selected as
one of the first Centers of Excellence within the state, becoming home to
the Center for Applied Psychological Research, which was subsequently
designated as an Accomplished Center of Excellence in recognition of
its consistently high quality research, teaching, and service. Salary for
the position is highly competitive, with supplemental research support
available through our designated Center of Excellence. Graduate degree
programs include APA-accredited doctoral programs in Clinical Psychology
and School Psychology; a doctoral program in Experimental Psychology; a
master’s degree program in General Psychology; and a M.A./Ed.S. Program in
School Psychology. Additional information on the Department of Psychology
is available at http://www.memphis.edu/psychology/. Interested applicants
must upload a curriculum vitae, a cover letter describing research and
teaching interests, contact information for a minimum of three professional
reference providers, selected publications (3-5), and a brief summary of
resources needed to begin their program of research and the estimated total
costs to: http://workforum.memphis.edu/postings/20721. Applicants may be
requested to submit more specific needs for research equipment and
resources (including estimated itemized costs) at a later date. Review of
applicants will begin on February 15, 2019 and may continue until the
position is filled. Applicants interested in this position should direct
inquiries to Dr. Art Graesser (graesser at memphis.edu), Chair of the
Psychology Cognitive Science Search Committee.
