Language Development and Disorders



The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa seeks applications for an Associate to Full Professor whose research examines the development of language and language disorders. We are seeking a scholar with a strong program of research in language development in one or multiple domains (e.g., phonology, semantics, grammar, discourse, reading). Research focus may include both typical and disordered populations across a range of areas that impact language and communication (e.g. developmental language disorder, dyslexia, autism, attention-deficit disorder). Applicants with expertise in the design, implementation and dissemination of evidence-based interventions are particularly encouraged to apply.



The successful applicant will maintain an active program of empirical research, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in his/her areas of expertise. The University of Iowa offers exciting opportunities for interdisciplinary scholarship across a number of campus facilities and programs, including the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Clinic, the Center for Disabilities and Development, the DeLTA Center, the Cognitive Science of Language Program, the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Neuroscience, and Iowa Center for Reading Research, well as strong collaborations with units such as Psychological and Brain Sciences, Otolaryngology, and the Iowa Neuroscience Institute. Opportunities for implementation science research with area school systems, early childhood programs and publicly or privately affiliated service providers also exist.



Education Requirement: Prospective candidates must have earned a PhD in communication sciences and disorders, human development, cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience or a related field.



Required Qualifications: 1) evidence of an active and productive research program in the area of language development and disorders; 2) an established record of external funding; 3) a record of effective teaching at the post-secondary level; and 4) evidence of service at the university or professional level.



Desired Qualifications: 1) certification/licensure in speech-language pathology; 2) demonstrated commitment to working across disciplinary boundaries; and 3) evidence of leadership in university or professional contexts commensurate with rank.
