Academic position - Lecturer in Symbolic Systems, Stanford University (3 years, renewable): apply at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/program/29530
Description

The Symbolic Systems Program at Stanford seeks to hire a Lecturer for a three-year, renewable term. Symbolic Systems is a unique, interdisciplinary program focused on the intersection of minds and machines. We offer a rigorous BS program with concentrations in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, natural language processing, neuroscience, human-computer interaction, and other areas as well as a small research-focused MS degree.
A successful hire will be expected to (1) teach undergraduate level courses for Symbolic Systems, (2) perform other SYMSYS-related duties, and (3) contribute to Stanford's COLLEGE program. The COLLEGE program is a new first-year requirement. You can read about its offerings here: https://college.stanford.edu/courses.
Stanford is on the quarter system (three academic quarters of 10 weeks each) and the normal teaching load of a lecturer is the equivalent of 6 courses over the three quarters. We anticipate that the position?s teaching load will be:
?two quarters in which (a) one regular course in each quarter will be taught as a capstone senior-level course in Symbolic Systems, based on the Lecturer?s interest areas and program needs; and (b) the lecturer will supervise an additional independent study course as well as performing other program-related duties (e.g., program capstone development and advising, assistance with graduate admissions, and coordinating undergraduate research placements), and
?one quarter in which the lecturer will contribute to Stanford?s first-year COLLEGE program by teaching two independent sections of one of the COLLEGE courses.
We will endeavor to provide opportunities for the Lecturer to continue their practice as a scholar both through annual contributions to a travel and professional expenses account and via a workload during the academic year that allows time for research and scholarly writing. This position could be a valuable opportunity for an applicant who is seeking postdoctoral teaching experience related to symbolic systems, and/or who is pursuing a career as a university lecturer, liberal arts and/or community college instructor, professional student advisor, academic administrator, or college preparatory teacher.
The position will begin on August 1 2025 and the successful hire will be expected to attend the COLLEGE training program in August.
An application should include a CV and a cover letter that addresses your qualifications including:
?intersection of academic interests with the mission of the Symbolic Systems program;
?demonstrated excellence in teaching, especially with first year students;
?relevant research and teaching related to classes in the COLLEGE curriculum; and
?an indication of what other classes you would be prepared to teach (especially as related to potential seminars that might be of interest to Symbolic Systems students).
Please also provide the email addresses of three references, at least one of whom can speak to your teaching record. After an initial review phase, we will request letters of reference and other teaching materials for short-listed applicants.
The salary for this position is $88K for Academic Year 2025-26. Stanford University has provided a pay representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.
Inquiries may be directed to Michael Bernstein, Interim Director, msb@cs.stanford.edu.
The application process will close on February 15, 2025.
Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
