investigate the organization of object knowledge in the brain. The project
involves testing healthy individuals using fMRI, psychophysics, and tDCS, and is
funded by the Portuguese Science Foundation. Researchers will work directly
with Jorge Almeida and members of his lab in Coimbra.<span></span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0cm 0cm 12pt;line-height:normal;font-size:11pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif" lang="EN-US">Required Qualifications:<span></span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0cm 0cm 12pt;line-height:normal;font-size:11pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif" lang="EN-US">Applicants should have a PhD degree in psychology, neuroscience, computer
science, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline. Applicants are
expected to have a very strong research background in the design and analysis
of functional brain-imaging experiments (fMRI). Experience with fMRI analyses
programs (e.g., SPM, FSL, MrVISTA, Freesurfer, Brainvoyager) is a must. Good understanding
and command of analytical techniques used in vision and object recognition is a
plus – in particular experience with population Receptive Fields/phase lag
analysis is important. Experience with Representational Similarity Analysis,
MVPA, and computational approaches such as self-organizing maps is a plus. Programming
skills (MATLAB, Python) are a must. Good English (oral and written)
communicative skills are necessary (English is the official language at the Proaction
lab, so speaking Portuguese is not a requirement). This post will require
designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data associated with the
project, preparing manuscripts for publication, presenting results at national
and international conferences and the possible supervision of research
assistants and students. <span></span></span></p>

and a half to 3 years, and may start mid to late 2018 (or even early 2019; start
date can be negotiated a little bit). The salary is competitive for the cost of
living in Portugal (and particularly in Coimbra), and follows the Portuguese Post-Doctoral

been investigating how objects are recognized from visual inspection (e.g., Almeida,
J., et al., (2017). Polarity-specific transcranial Direct Current Stimulation
effects on object-selective neural responses in the Inferior Parietal Lobe</span><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">. <i>Cortex, 94</i><span>, 176-181; </span>Kristensen, S., Garcea,
F.E., Mahon, B.Z., & Almeida, J. (2016). </span><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif" lang="EN-US">Temporal
frequency tuning reveals interactions between the dorsal and ventral visual
streams. <i>Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience</i>, <i>28</i>(9), 1295-1302; Almeida,
J., Fintz, A., & Mahon, B. (2013). Tool manipulation knowledge is retrieved
by way of the ventral visual object processing pathway. <i>Cortex, 49</i>(9), 2334-2344). In particular, we are interested in how
the knowledge we hold about objects is organized in the brain in order to allow
for fast and efficient recognition of objects – how is it that such a
computationally complex task is performed so effortlessly? We have access to a
3T MRI scanner with a 32-channel coil (with EEG inside the scanner), to tDCS with
neuronavigation, and to a fully set psychophysics lab. We have EEG and
eyetracking on site. We also have access, through other collaborations, to a 7T
scanner. Finally, the University of Coimbra is a 700 year old University and
has been selected as a UNESCO world Heritage site. Coimbra is one of the most
lively university cities in the world, and it is a beautiful city with easy
access to the beach and mountain. <span></span></span></p>
