You're invited! We are pleased to invite you to the second session of the Thinking About Thinking Fellowship Seminar Series, taking place on Thursday 14 May at 6pm BST. This session will feature Dr Anna Schrimpf and Nicolay Hagen from Varden and will focus on the realities of building applied AI systems for governments, foundations, non-profits and other consequential institutions. The ThAT Fellowship Seminars are designed to give our Academic Fellowship community access to leading researchers, founders and entrepreneurs working across AI, neuroscience, cognitive science and related fields. Over the coming months, the series will offer Fellows the opportunity to learn from, engage with and ask questions of people working at the forefront of intelligence research and innovation. For the first few sessions, we are opening the seminars to a wider audience as an introduction to the Fellowship. Yet deploying frontier technology inside public and mission-driven organisations presents challenges that differ substantially from those found in traditional startup environments. In this session, Dr Anna Schrimpf and Nicolay Hagen will discuss what they have learned building applied AI systems through Varden. Drawing on experience working with governments, foundations, non-profits, and enterprises, they will explore why some global problems attract sustained resources while others remain neglected, what makes AI deployments succeed or fail inside complex institutions, and how young researchers and technologists can pursue work that is both ambitious and socially meaningful. The session will also reflect on the broader future of applied AI in consequential systems and what responsible, scalable deployment may require in the years ahead.
