Fully funded postdoctoral opportunity in Cognitive Science at Dartmouth (2 years guaranteed, with possible extension).

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on questions surrounding memory and generalization (broadly construed) in humans and machines.

The postdoc will lead and contribute to basic research initiatives within the NSF-funded<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/show-award/?AWD_ID=2433429&HistoricalAwards=false> AI Research Institute on Interaction for AI Assistants (ARIA<https://web.cs.dartmouth.edu/>), collaborating with investigators at Brown, UC Berkeley, and other partner institutions. The position will be housed in Dartmouth’s growing Cognitive Science Program<https://cognitive-science.dartmouth.edu/>, with close collaboration with faculty in Departments of Psychological and Brain Sciences<https://pbs.dartmouth.edu/> and Computer Science.<https://web.cs.dartmouth.edu/>

Our lab<https://www.mindbraincomputationlab.com/> is interested in exploring questions such as: Why are some cognitive processes so capacity-limited? What principles and mechanisms enable the acquisition and use of abstract knowledge? What are the costs and benefits of compositionality? What common information-processing principles do humans and LLMs share, and where do they diverge? Both empirical and theoretical approaches to these and related questions are welcome.

Applicants should have completed (or be close to completing) a PhD in a relevant discipline such as cognitive science, computer science, AI/ML, psychology, neuroscience, or physics.

To apply, please send the following materials to Steven Frankland (Steven.M.Frankland at dartmouth.edu<mailto:Steven.M.Frankland at dartmouth.edu>) and cc Kristin Dang (Kristin.M.Dang at dartmouth.edu<mailto:Kristin.M.Dang at dartmouth.edu>):
