Dear Colleagues,
Together with Elena Benini and Julie Bugg, I’m guest editing a special issue of Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition on Conflict Adaptation Across Single and Multitasking Paradigms.
Over the past 30 years, research on cognitive control has uncovered many signatures of conflict adaptation — from classic single-task paradigms (Stroop, flanker, Simon) to more complex multi-tasking contexts (task switching, dual-tasking).
This special issue aims to foster connection between these research strands by bringing together work on (but not limited to) three broad questions:
· Different sources of conflict: How do we adapt to different types of conflict (e.g., response vs. task conflict, or semantic conflict in Stroop)? Does adaptation transfer across levels of processing, or is it type-specific?
· Mechanisms of adaptation: Are transient and sustained conflict adaptation phenomena explained by attentional weighting, and if so, how does this work in multitasking contexts where the relevant/irrelevant features change from trial to trial?
· Stability vs. flexibility: Do these two cognitive abilities trade off, or can they be regulated independently? And could debates around this question reflect differences in the level of processing being measured?
Submission details
The deadline for initial submission is 1st October 2026. We welcome empirical studies, as well as reviews that offer new theoretical insights or integrative perspectives. For further details, please find the full call here: https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/xlm/conflict-adaptation
For further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me (luca.moretti at psych.rwth-aachen.de<mailto:luca.moretti at psych.rwth-aachen.de>) or Elena (elena.benini at unil.ch<mailto:elena.benini at unil.ch>).
We’re really looking forward to your exciting contributions, and we’d be grateful if you could share this call with colleagues who might be interested.
Best Regards,
Luca Moretti, Elena Benini & Julie Bugg
