Dear colleagues,

The tenth Model-Based Neuroscience and Cognition Summer School will be held from July 29 to August 2, 2024, at the University of Amsterdam. The summer school follows the annual meetings of the Society for Mathematical Psychology and the Cognitive Science Society, both held in the Netherlands.

The Summer School will provide participants with hands-on experience in both cognitive modeling using evidence-accumulation models and cognitive neuroscience methods. This year, the summer school includes a three day introduction to evidence-accumulation modeling using Bayesian inference. In the last two days, participants can choose between a neuroscience and an advanced cognition track. In the neuroscience track, participants will learn how to create joint models of behavior and EEG/fMRI data. In the advanced cognition track, participants will learn how to use the evidence-accumulation framework to formalize performance in complex experimental paradigms, how to construct joint models of multiple tasks using techniques such as hierarchical factor models, and how to combine evidence-accumulation and reinforcement-learning models.

The program includes a series of lectures on model-based cognitive and neuroscience from experts, including Andrew Heathcote, Dora Matzke, Michael Nunez, Steven Miletić, and Birte Forstmann.

The summer school is aimed at PhD-students and early postdocs who wish to acquire the basics of Bayesian evidence-accumulation modeling, and combine that knowledge with 1) experimental and theoretical neuroscience research; or 2) advanced modeling techniques aimed at capturing performance in complex and dynamic paradigms and the integration of evidence-accumulation with reinforcement-learning principles.

Application and registration

The registration fee for the Summer School is € 550. Participants should make their own housing arrangements. Space is limited, therefore we ask participants to provide a statement of interest. We will select participants based on the relevance of the Summer School to their research. Participants should be familiar with general programming concepts and state in their statement of interest which programming languages and software packages they typically use. Familiarity with R is particularly recommended. The application deadline is May 15, 2024.

More information about the Summer School including lecturers, preliminary program, and application can be found at https://modelbasedneurosci.com/.

We look forward to welcoming you to Amsterdam!
