The Department of Cognitive Science (DEC) at Ecole Normale Supérieure in
Paris is offering a postdoc position in phonetics and laboratory
phonology
TASKS
The postdoc's primary responsibility will be to conduct research in
articulatory phonetics, as well as research investigating the perceptual
consequences of the articulatory effects. The postdoc will work on a
project which aims to understand and model (i) the spatio-temporal
articulatory modulations associated to the realisation of lexical stress
and (ii) the consequences of these modulations for the perception of the
affected speech sounds. The project also aims to investigate the
phonological implications of these phonetic findings, in particular for
the typology of stress-conditioned phonological processes. Connections
between linguistics and other fields in cognitive science beyond
phonetics and laboratory phonology are welcome.
While this is primarily a research position, it might also involve small
organisational responsibilities. Regular participation in collective
scientific activities (e.g. seminars and lab meetings) will be expected.
RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT
The postdoc will be affiliated to Department of cognitive science of the
ENS (DEC), which offers a rich interdisciplinary environment (see
especially the LSCP, and DEC Linguistics). The postdoc will be
co-supervised by Maria Giavazzi at DEC and Bowei Shao at the Laboratoire
de Phonétique et Phonologie (LPP). Other partners in the project are
Anne Hermes (LPP) and Sharon Peperkamp (DEC).
The DEC and the LPP are both located in the 5th arrondissement in Paris,
a few minutes walking distance apart. The postdoc will have access to
the DEC behavioral platform at ENS and to the speech physiology platform
of the LPP (Sorbonne Nouvelle), which has an EMA (AG501) device.
PROFILE
The successful applicant will have a strong background in speech
production (EMA, ultrasound). Additional experience in speech perception
and phonology will be considered a plus, but it's not a requirement. The
candidate should be able to contribute to the different phases of the
project, in terms of experimental design, data collection and analysis,
and paper write-up. Knowledge in MATLAB, Praat, Python, R, EMUWebApp (at
least a subset of these) is required. Experience with online testing
will also will be considered a plus, but it's not a requirement.
Excellent communication skills, team spirit, and an ability to work in
autonomy are essential.
Starting date: between April 1st 2025 and June 1st 2025. The applicant's
PhD should have been defended and filed by the starting date. The
