The Department of Psychology at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Cognitive Psychology at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 01, 2024. Successful candidates should be prepared to engage actively with a diverse range of students across the liberal arts. Teaching responsibilities for this position will regularly include two courses per semester (sometimes two sections of the same course): a course in the Introductory sequence (e.g., Introduction to Psychology or Research Methods), introductory and intermediate Cognitive Psychology courses, and an upper-level seminar on a topic related to the applicant’s research expertise. Other courses may be taught depending upon the candidate’s field of specialization. Areas of particular interest within Cognitive Psychology include adult high-level cognitive abilities, such as decision making, reasoning, critical thinking, problem-solving, planning and goal setting, creativity and innovation, consciousness, and metacognitive thinking. The successful applicant will maintain an active research program through which Smith students can obtain hands-on research experience, including presenting and writing up research. We are particularly interested in a scholar who investigates cognitive solutions to real-world problems, which include, but are not limited to, conspiracy thinking, heuristics and biases in decision making, climate-change denial, or naturalistic problem solving. We are also open to candidates whose data-collection methods for these topics include functional neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). A Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Science, or a relevant field is expected by the time of appointment. Candidates from groups underrepresented in Psychology are encouraged to apply.
