Dear colleagues,

Please see below for an announcement for Ph.D. student recruitment I'm offering through the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience and Health Sciences Programs at Mizzou. Ph.D. students would be housed in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences and would receive opportunities to conduct research with clinical populations. They would receive an 11-month research assistantship through a grant focusing on the neural substrates of the impact of hand gesture on second language acquisition, so candidates with interests adjacent to this topic are especially encouraged to apply.

Please encourage interested candidates to reach out to me via email, as I would be happy to chat about the program, my research and approach to mentorship, and resources available for Ph.D. students and research at Mizzou. Many thanks for your help in referring qualified candidates!

(Apologies for cross-posting!)

Best wishes,

Laura Morett

Dr. Laura Morett is recruiting Neuroscience Ph.D. students for her Neuroscience of Education Research on Development (NERD) lab to begin in the Fall of 2024.

The NERD lab (https://nerdlab.mystrikingly.com/), housed in the University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, focuses on the cognitive and neurobiological mechanisms that allow human language to support learning, focusing in particular on the relationship between gesture and speech. The goal of Dr. Morett’s research is to understand how the gesture-speech relationship changes between childhood and adulthood, how it enhances learning in diverse populations, and how it is abnormal in neurodevelopmental disorders such as ASD. To achieve this goal, she uses behavioral (video recording, eyetracking) and neuroscientific (EEG, MEG, fNIRS) techniques to study how the gesture-speech relationship contributes to learning in both children and adults. We are looking for students who are interested in studying gesture, developmental cognitive neuroscience, language and literacy, autism spectrum disorder, and/or bilingualism. Students holding degrees in neuroscience are especially encouraged to apply, but students from other related disciplines (e.g., speech-language pathology, cognitive science, learning sciences, STEM fields, psychology, computer science, kinesiology, OT, PT, education) will also be considered. Furthermore, students from diverse backgrounds (esp. women and historically underrepresented minorities) are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications:

  * Bachelor's or master's degree in neuroscience or other relevant field (e.g., cognitive science, psychology, STEM fields, education)
  * Interest in conducting interdisciplinary research that incorporates methods and perspectives from education, speech-language pathology, brain, and/or cognitive sciences
  * Ability to work with students and faculty in a variety of disciplines
  * Strong quantitative and programming skills
  * Strong writing and communication skills

Program and Application information:

The University of Missouri-Columbia invites applications for its Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Ph.D. Program (https://inp.missouri.edu/). Established in 2001, the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program (INP) seeks to promote basic and clinical research that investigates the molecular and cellular organization of the nervous system, the function of neural systems including vision and hearing, behaviors generated by the brain, and neurological diseases and disorders; provide a broad and yet individualized training experience required for our graduates to succeed in future careers in academic research and teaching institutions, industry, and scientific publication; and facilitate the creative exchange of ideas among MU’s neuroscience community to stimulate new forms of interdisciplinary research and teaching. Virtually all of our INP graduate students are financially supported by their faculty advisor’s research grants, and so the number of students accepted each year varies and depends on the availability of grant funding to support new students.

Applicants should apply online at https://applygrad.missouri.edu/apply/. Deadline for receipt of all application materials is December 15, 2023, for the Fall 2024 semester. Submit all required application materials through the Office of Graduate Studies Online Application System, Slate. A CV/resume, unofficial transcript, and three reference letters are required to complete the online application process. Please contact Dr. Morett (lmorett at health.missouri.edu<mailto:lmorett at health.missouri.edu>) or Dr. Beversdorf (BeversdorfD at health.missouri.edu<mailto:BeversdorfD at health.missouri.edu>), Chair of Graduate Recruitment Committee, if you have any questions.

Applicants may also elect to apply to the Health and Rehabilitation Science Ph.D. Program, which is housed in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. More information regarding this program can be found here: https://healthsciences.missouri.edu/phd-in-health-and-rehabilitation-science/. Please contact Dr. Reid-Arndt (ReidArndtS at health.missouri.edu<mailto:ReidArndtS at health.missouri.edu>), program director, if you have questions regarding this program.
