I am currently recruiting two PhD candidates at the intersection of AI, Cognitive Science, HCI, and Mobility. The PhD candidates would work in multidisciplinary teams at Utrecht University.
Please see below for their description and links to the advertisements (through which you can apply). Both positions would start this fall.

Best wishes,
Chris Janssen
Utrecht University

PhD position 1: Cooperation between Human Operators and AI Algorithms in the Railway Sector
Deadline: May 21st
This PhD research project will investigate how humans operate in the logistical planning process of the railways, as well as how the contribution of automated planners can be made insightful for human operators and vice versa. The PhD candidate will use a variety of social science and AI methods, with a particular emphasis on computational cognitive modeling of decision-making and controlled experiments on human decision-making. Moreover, through collaboration with external partners (NS and ProRail) the PhD candidate has a unique opportunity to conduct qualitative and quantitative studies with operators that are responsible for rail planning. Supervision is by Dr. Chris Janssen, Dr. Leendert van Maanen, Dr. Silja Renooij, and Prof. Dr. Mehdi Dastani. The project is part of the wider LTP Robust project and the RAIL lab. Note that the position has a Dutch language requirement.

PhD position 2: Psychologically validated digital twins of human decision-making in urban mobility
Deadline: May 31st
Digital twins of urban mobility are widely used to understand and predict traffic flow in and through cities. The PhD research project will investigate how individual differences in decision-making can be modeled in digital twins of urban mobility (e.g., cars, pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation in different urban settings) in a validated, more psychologically plausible way. The project offers an exciting opportunity for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI, Cognitive Science, Geosciences, and Computer Science. Moreover, there is active collaboration between Utrecht University, the research institute TNO, crowd simulation company uCrowds, and the municipality of Utrecht. Supervision is by Dr. Chris Janssen, Dr. Leendert van Maanen, Dr. Bas Spierings, Dr. Roland Geraerts, and Dr. Taoufik Bakri (TNO The Hague). The project is funded through the Utrecht AI Labs and TNO.
