Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cognitive Models of Visual Perception
Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence
US Naval Research Laboratory
-----------------------------------------------------------

The Interactive Systems Section at the Naval Research Laboratory is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral fellowship to collaborate on the development of a cognitively-grounded computational model of visual perception and attention. The model will explore attention’s role in processing a visual scene to identify static and dynamic spatial relationships between objects. The postdoc will develop his or her own research program in addition to working with Dr. Andrew Lovett and Dr. Sunny Khemlani at NRL's Washington, DC headquarters. The position will involve both computational model development and exploring psychological theories of human perception, with an eye towards building a model that generates scene descriptions that are (a) similar to the mental representations a human might produce when viewing the same scene, and (b) easily understandable.

The ideal candidate has (or will have) a Ph.D. in cognitive science, computer science, cognitive psychology, or a related discipline, as well as a foundation in computational methods and an interest in building intelligent agents that reason the way humans do. Postdocs will be hired through the NRC Research Associateship Program, which can last up to 3 years and offers a stipend of $87,000, as well as funds for travel and equipment. Only US citizenship or green card holders are eligible for the program.

The Interactive Systems Section at the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence is devoted to both basic and applied research on cognitive science and autonomous systems. The lab is interdisciplinary and focuses on attention’s role in guiding perception, cognition, and action in humans and machines. Recent work in the lab has explored object-tracking, spatial reasoning, planning, and navigation.

Applicants should send a letter of interest and a curriculum vitae to Dr. Andrew Lovett (andrew.lovett at nrl.navy.mil). Review of applications will begin January 20th, and will be ongoing until the position is filled.
