Women in Cognitive Science is extending the deadline for submission for the 2020 Networking Awards:

New deadline:
Submit all materials at WiCSNetworkingAward at gmail.com<mailto:WiCSNetworkingAward at gmail.com> by 5 PM ET on September 21, 2020.

At this time of the pandemic when no travel is possible, it may seem odd to apply for a networking award, but we want to encourage all who are eligible to consider doing so if you meet the criteria listed. Despite the inability to meet in person, the virtual format may provide some additional flexibility in connecting with others. And it is certainly no less important. Feel free to be in touch with questions and to encourage all who are eligible to apply!

Questions can be directed to Irene Kan, Chair, 2020 WiCS Networking Award Committee: irene.kan at villanova.edu<mailto:irene.kan at villanova.edu>

The Psychonomic Society and Women in Cognitive Science
Networking Awards for Junior Scientists
2020 Annual Meeting of the Psychonomic Society
November 19-21, 2020

Presenting one’s research at professional meetings such as the Annual Meeting of the Psychonomic Society is an important way for individuals to become known in the professional community and to develop collaborative relationships with other professionals in the field. Given the relatively short time frame of the tenure period, it is essential that individuals begin to appear at professional meetings early in their careers. Therefore, the purpose of this award is to encourage graduate students, postdocs, and assistant professors to participate in and network at the 2020 Meeting of the Psychonomic Society that will be held virtually during the pandemic from November 19-21, 2020.

At this time where there is no travel but there are exceptional pressures on remote productivity, we hope to fund awards at a level that will contribute to effective virtual networking. Awards will provide no less than $100 but potentially up to $500, depending on the availability of funds.

Applicants must be:

1. A graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, or assistant professor

2. Listed as an author on a talk or poster at the 2020 Meeting of the Psychonomic Society

3. Note: A woman scientist of any nationality may receive the award. Depending on the final availability of funds, there may be some networking awards that are restricted to particular locations.

To apply, submit the following to the Networking Award Committee:

1. Evidence of a submitted paper or poster abstract

2. A networking plan. This plan should identify a senior scientist with whom the applicant would network at the conference; although only women scientists are eligible for this award, the targeted senior scientist can be of any gender. The plan should also include the specific goals to be accomplished with the targeted scientist (e.g., develop a collaboration, exchange research ideas, receive input on experiments, a grant proposal, or a manuscript), and should describe the relevance of this to the applicant's research program. The plan should be approximately 2 pages long (single-spaced, using a 12-point font)

3. Evidence of agreement from the networking target(s) to carry out the plan (e.g., an email confirmation)

4. A current CV

Please combine all four components into a single pdf file.

Conflict of Interest: Applicants must not be current (or former, within the last 5 years) trainees of current members of the WiCS Advisory Board or of the current Networking Awards Committee.

New Relevant Dates:
Submit all materials at WiCSNetworkingAward at gmail.com<mailto:WiCSNetworkingAward at gmail.com> by 5 PM ET on September 21, 2020.

Awards will be announced on or around October 15, 2020. Winners will be honored at a ceremony at the 2020 Annual WiCS Meeting (Virtual) on Thursday, November 19 at 4 pm (Psychonomics Time – Time Zone to be determined) before the formal start of the Psychonomic Society meeting. Details regarding participation in the virtual format are forthcoming.

Winners are required to submit a report on the meeting and networking experience. The deadline for submitting the final report is December 20, 2020. Reports should be submitted to WiCSNetworkingAward at gmail.com<mailto:WiCSNetworkingAward at gmail.com>.

Decisions will be made by the WiCS Networking Awards Committee (Irene Kan, Chair, Villanova University, Lisa Fazio, Vanderbilt University, Holly Bowen, Southern Methodist University, and Sara Davis, Skidmore College).

Funding for this program comes from the Perception, Action, and Cognition Program at NSF, the Psychonomic Society, the Society for Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Science (APA Division 3), and WiCS Canada.
