The Institute for Intelligent Systems in conjunction with the Psychology
Department at the University of Memphis invites applications for a 2-year
funded postdoctoral fellow position is available for a collaborative
project led by Dr. Pavlik and Neil Zimmerman, funded by Eric Schmidt,
Executive Chairman of Alphabet, Inc. This University-Industry collaboration
builds upon the multi-site LearnSphere educational data consortium (
www.learnsphere.org), a 5-year project sponsored by the Database
Infrastructure Building Blocks program at NSF. The full-time research
fellow will work in collaboration with Pavlik, Zimmerman, and McGraw-Hill
Education on a project to optimize the adaptive scheduling used in
McGraw-Hill practice applications designed to learn domain knowledge
efficiently. The research will occur in 3 stages, a first stage of
describing an adaptive computational model of the existing data, a second
stage where the optimal conditions for adaptive learning are determined for
this model following techniques described in Pavlik and Anderson (2008),
and a third stage where we compare the new scheduling algorithm with the
current McGraw-Hill scheduling system.

The postdoc will spend approximately half-time in Memphis and half-time in
Boston, which can be negotiated at the time of hiring. At Memphis the
postdoc will be affiliated with the Institute for Intelligent Systems, an
interdisciplinary center of research. In Boston the postdoc would be part
of a dynamic team of learning science professionals making products for the
educational market. All candidates should be highly motivated and focused.

Desired qualifications include:

● PhD in Psychology, Computer Science, or related field

● Experience with mathematical models of student learning
